In illuminated manuscripts, like The Book of Kells and Dante’s Divine Comedy, text is supplemented with illustrations, decorated letters, borders, and figurative scenes in radiant colors and glowing gold and silver. The bright nature of these manuscripts helps us contemplate our faith and the symbolism of hope in trying times.
Join Trinity Retreat Center and acclaimed iconographer Susan Kelly vonMedicus for a weekend of interactive reflection as we immerse ourselves in this practice by using the “white vine” motif of Renaissance Europe and humanist italic script technique. This live online workshop will use the same historic materials used in the middle ages.
Space is limited in this Zoom class. The fee is $250, which includes a comprehensive package of art materials that will be sent to your home so that you can create your own illuminated manuscript during this interactive online retreat.

The Zoom link for the weekend class and final schedule will be sent to you in January. Classes will start on Zoom at 9:30 a.m. with lectures and demonstrations of about 90 minutes each.  Students will then work on their own to accomplish the steps they have learned and then submit a photo for discussion. They will meet again on Zoom just after lunch to share their work and learn about the next steps. Students will meet again at the end of the day at about 4 p.m. on Zoom for evening prayer and to wrap-up for the day. On Sunday, class will start with worship and instruction in the late morning and a final session in the afternoon that will end at 4:30 p.m.  There will be three workshops on Friday and Saturday, and two on Sunday as well as worship times. Students will also need to devote time to their work between online teaching sessions between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
