Mysticism is often viewed as the privileged experience of a few chosen, holy individuals. But German Jesuit Karl Rahner wrote about “everyday mysticism,” and Carmelite Sister Ruth Burrows described the mystical life simply as “God touching the depths of our being.” God is closer than we think — to all of us. This retreat explores life events and God’s unmistakable presence in our daily rhythms. Through exploring Thomas Merton’s experiences and others, you will learn to notice, identify, and appreciate mystical encounters in your everyday life.

Led by Sophfronia Scott, a leading contemplative thinker who writes nonfiction books including The Seeker and the Monk, Love’s Long Line, and This Child of Faith, and novels including Wild, Beautiful, and Free, Unforgivable Love, and All I Need to Get By. She is the founding director of Alma College’s Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing.
